An act of desecration
SIR – May I draw the attention of your readership to a classic case of desecration of our heritage in the landscape as is currently taking place on Mynydd y Betws in Carmarthenshire.
Work is already well under way to build a gigantic wind farm on this mountain but, it has now come to light, thanks to the vigilance of Rescue – The British Archaeological Trust, that there is a 500-yard Neolithic stone row, believed to be up to 5,000 years old, on the site – part of which has already been damaged by the ploughing up of the land by heavy machinery in preparation for the wind farm.
The trust “find it incredible” that the wind farm developer’s archaeologists did not see this important stone alignment and they have now called on Carmarthenshire County Council to apply for a Town and County Planning Order to stop work on the site until a full survey of the area is carried out.
How many other landscapes of major archaeological and historical importance have, unbeknown to us, already been destroyed to make way for these expensive and useless monstrosities and how much more of our heritage in the landscape is to be destroyed during the years ahead?
We must be every bit as vigilant as Rescue to ensure that such is not allowed to happen on Mynydd y Betws or anywhere else in our nation and Embassy Glyndwr hereby calls on one and all to write letters to political and community representatives stating that you will not collaborate with allowing your heritage in the landscape to be destroyed by windmills.
We also call on one and all to support a campaign that is to be launched on Dydd Gwyl Dewi by Ymgyrch Treftadaeth Cymru on Mynydd y Betws.
The aim of this campaign will be to draw the attention of Wales and the world to the criminal acts of desecration of our heritage in the landscape taking place in Wales.
